What is SSL (Secure Socket Layer)?

A protocol developed for transmitting private documents via the Internet. SSL works by using a private key to encrypt data that's transferred over the SSL connection. Both Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer support SSL and many Web sites use the protocol to obtain confidential user information, such as credit card numbers and other financial details.

Verisign is the dominant certificate authority on the internet at the present time, though many of its certificates are signed as RSA Data Security. A private corporation that acts as a certifying authority and that provides certificates.

What is CACHE?

A cache temporarily stores the web pages that you have visited. When you use GO, BACK, or any other means to revisit a page, browser first checks to see if it is available in cache and will retrieve it from there. If memory allocated to cache in your computer becomes full, browser discards older documents.

What is a Digital Certificate?

A digital certificate is an electronic means of establishing your credentials when doing business or other transactions on the Web. It is issued by a certification authority (CA). It contains your name, a serial number, expiration dates, a copy of the certificate holder's public key (used for encrypting and decrypting messages and digital signatures), and the digital signature of the certificate-issuing authority so that a recipient can verify that the certificate is real. Some digital certificates conform to a standard, X.509. Digital certificates can be kept in registries so that authenticated users can look up other users' public keys.

What is a Firewall?

A term for any device that would prevent undesirables on the global Internet from getting at your network. It also often prevents or controls users from getting out to the Internet from your local network. A firewall allows only specific kinds of messages from the Internet to flow in and out of the internal network. This protects the internal network from intruders or hackers who might try to use the Internet to break into those systems.
